A banda britânica Coldplay surgiu em 1998 na sua formação completa: o vocalista principal Chris Martin, o guitarrista Jonny Buckland, o baixista Guy Berryman e o baterista Will Champion, também como vocal de apoio e multi-instrumentista. A banda já ganhou 62 prêmios das 209 indicações que recebeu, incluindo seis Brit Awards.

Que tal aprender inglês com uma música da banda? "Up & Up" está carregada de ação, pois traz muitos verbos em seus versos e a grande maioria no gerúndio, implicitamente o presente contínuo ou present continuous.

Esse tempo verbal indica que uma ação ou condição está acontecendo agora no momento em que está sendo dita; ação frequente e que pode continuar por um período no futuro.

O presente contínuo é formado pelo verbo to be + verbo principal no gerúndio, ou seja, com a terminação –ing.

Antes de ver a resposta, confira algumas regras de uso do gerúndio

1. O gerúndio em inglês não é usado da mesma forma que o português. Por isso, é importante estudar as seguintes regras onde o gerúndio é usado:

• Após preposições

Alguns exemplos:

"You can improve your English by listening to music".

"She’s afraid of making mistakes".

"He’s good at writing".

• Após alguns verbos

Os mais comuns são: admit, avoid, appreciate, consider, continue, delay, deny, dislike, enjoy, escape, finish, forgive, imagine, include, keep, mention, miss, practice, recommend, resist, risk, suggest, try, understand, quit, stop (mas há uma variação de significado da frase quando usamos infinitivo depois dele)

Qualquer bom livro de gramática traz detalhes sobre esses verbos e outros que podem ser usados com o gerúndio ou infinitivo depois, como: like e love.

 

• Após algumas expressões

Alguns exemplos: can’t stand, it’s worth, be used to, get used to, can’t help,  feel like,  it’s no good,  look forward to,  what about, how about, it’s no use.

• Como substantivo

Quando usamos um verbo como substantivo de uma frase, este tem de estar no gerúndio. Em português, usamos o infinitivo.

"Learning English can be easy if you focus on it".

"Listening to music is one of my favorite hobbies".

 

2. Para inserir o –ING aos verbos, há algumas regras ortográficas:

• Verbos terminados com a vogal E, elimina-se a vogal E e acrescenta-se o -ing.

Exemplos: dance – dancing / leave - leaving Exceções:  be – being / see - seeing / agree - agreeing

• Verbos monossilábicos terminados em consoante + vogal + consoante, duplica-se a última consoante e acrescenta-se o -ing.

Exemplos: swim – swimming / sit – sitting / run - running

O que já não ocorre com rain – raining, pois tem duas vogais entre as consoantes.

• Verbos de duas ou mais sílabas, terminados em consoante + vogal + consoante, se forem palavras oxítonas, dobra-se a última consoante e acrescenta-se o -ing.

Exemplos: forget – forgetting / begin – beginning

Não se duplica a última consoante se o verbo terminar em W, X ou Y.

O verbo travel apresenta duas formas de gerúndio: traveling (inglês americano), travelling (inglês britânico).

• Se o verbo terminar em IE, substitui-se -ie por -y + -ing.

Exemplos:  lie – lying / die - dying 5) Para os demais verbos, acrescenta-se apenas o -ing.

Exemplos: fetch – fetching / sing - singing

 

3. Há alguns verbos que não são usados no presente contínuo

Mesmo que em português esses verbos sejam comumente usados no presente contínuo, o mesmo não ocorre em inglês. Neste caso, a opção é o presente simples. Abaixo a lista de alguns:

Believe, dislike, doubt, imagine, know, like, love, hate, prefer, realize, recognize, remember, see, suppose, understand, want, wish.
